Putrajaya, 25th – Beginning March 1, a total of 24 million 10kg bags of locally produced white rice (BPT) will be available in the Peninsular Malaysia market at a subsidized rate of RM26 per bag.
According to Director-General of the Paddy and Rice Regulatory Division, Datuk Baru Isham, these essential goods will be distributed following strict guidelines to ensure they reach 400,000 underprivileged households. Each head of a hardcore poor household (KIR) will be allowed to purchase two bags.
He explained that this six-month pilot program aims to distribute 24 million bags of subsidized 10kg local white rice, specifically targeting 400,000 low-income households, including 77,000 heads of hardcore poor families.
“The government previously announced a RM150 million special subsidy for six months as part of an intervention effort. As a result, the distribution of subsidized local white rice will commence on March 1, coinciding with the start of Ramadan, and continue until August 31.”
Increase in Rice Procurement Floor Price
Agriculture and Food Security Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, recently stated that, effective February 16, the floor price for paddy procurement has been raised from RM1,300 per metric ton to RM1,500 per metric ton.
He cited rising expenses, including labor, fertilizers, pesticides, and other agricultural inputs, as factors influencing the production cost of white rice, which subsequently affects market pricing.
Additionally, he confirmed that the price of local white rice will be maintained at RM2.60 per kilogram for the next six months. During this period, the government will cover part of the production cost, amounting to an estimated RM150 million.
“This initiative ensures a steady supply of approximately 24 million bags of 10kg white rice in the market.”
Ensuring Proper Distribution of Subsidized Rice
Datuk Baru Isham stressed that each head of a hardcore poor household will be limited to purchasing two bags per transaction. Retailers will be given clear instructions to guarantee that the rice is sold exclusively to the intended recipients.
He reassured the public that the subsidized rice, set for release on March 1, will not disappear from the market due to strict oversight.
The government is confident that the Malaysian Agricultural Regulatory and Enforcement Agency (MAREA), combined with an AI-powered monitoring and tracking system, will ensure effective regulation.
“There will be 1,200 MAREA officers monitoring the distribution of each bag, which will also feature a label for easier tracking. Additionally, a 24-hour operations room will be in place for continuous supervision.”
“I urge everyone to understand that this subsidized rice is meant for those in need. Any misuse will not be tolerated, and the government will take firm action.”
While no identity verification will be required at the time of purchase, Datuk Baru Isham emphasized that the government is relying on public awareness and responsibility to ensure the subsidy benefits the right groups.
When asked about the possibility of foreign workers purchasing subsidized rice, he clarified that the priority is to assist low-income Malaysians.
“We are discussing this matter with the government to ensure that local white rice is reserved for Malaysian citizens, as the primary objective is to support the people.”
He also warned that any retailers found manipulating or abusing the system would face strict penalties for failing to comply with the sales regulations.
