(George Town, February 11) — According to data released by the Department of Statistics, the number of male babies born in Malaysia during the first three quarters of 2024 exceeded female babies by 8,879. In the first quarter of 2024, Malaysia recorded 106,386 births, with 54,747 male babies and 51,639 female babies. When compared to the first quarter of 2023, which had 117,413 newborns, the number of births in the first quarter of 2024 showed a 9.4% decrease.
In the second quarter of 2024, Malaysia saw 100,732 babies born, with 51,759 being male and 48,973 female. This was a 10.2% decrease compared to the 112,197 births in the second quarter of 2023. The third quarter of 2024 saw 100,645 newborns, with 51,815 male babies and 48,830 female babies. Again, this represented a 12.3% decrease compared to the 114,764 babies born in the same period in 2023.
Moreover, in the first quarter of 2024, there was a reduction of 11,027 babies, with the number dropping from 117,413 in 2023 to 106,386 in 2024, a decrease of 9.4%. Similarly, the second quarter saw a decrease of 11,465 babies, from 112,197 in 2023 to 100,732 in 2024, or 10.2%. The third quarter also experienced a decline, with the number of newborns dropping by 14,119, from 114,764 in 2023 to 100,645 in 2024, a decrease of 12.3%.
Typically, for developed countries, the total fertility rate must reach at least 2.1 to maintain population stability. However, Malaysia’s fertility rate in 2023 was only 1.7, and it has continued to decline further in 2024.
