Japanese company CASIO has been producing electronic dictionaries since 1981 and has consistently held the top market share. However, with the widespread adoption of smartphones, personal computers for learning, and tablets, the sales of electronic dictionaries have been declining year by year. On Monday, CASIO announced that it would discontinue the development of new electronic dictionary models.
According to Sankei News, CASIO stated that its existing electronic dictionaries will continue to be produced and sold based on market demand, but production volume will be significantly reduced. The Japan Business Machine and Information System Industries Association (JBMIA) estimates that domestic shipments of electronic dictionaries in 2023 were around 385,000 units, only one-seventh or even less than the peak sales in 2007.
CASIO launched the highly functional “EX-word” series in 1996, which was well received by consumers. Despite competition from Sharp and Canon, CASIO managed to maintain its position as the market leader. However, in recent years, the Japanese government has implemented the “GIGA School Initiative,” aiming to provide every elementary and junior high school student with a learning device, leading to a sharp decline in the use of electronic dictionaries among students.
