Drone Operations Require Flight Permits

Drone Operations Require Flight Permits

(Klang, Feb 16) The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) has issued a warning that all drones, regardless of whether they are involved in low-risk or high-risk operations, must obtain a flight permit before any activity can take place.

This includes drones flying below 400 feet or other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with cameras, used for purposes such as wedding photography, corporate video production, and entertainment events.

A CAAM spokesperson clarified that the permit fee for drones weighing less than 20 kilograms is 250 MYR.

The spokesperson also referred to a recent safety directive issued by CAAM’s CEO, Datuk Norazman, which stated that operating without the required permits would lead to penalties under Malaysia's Civil Aviation Act.

Last year, CAAM discovered that some drone operations, particularly training activities, were carried out without the necessary approvals or permits.

Norazman emphasized that all training operations, including those conducted by remote pilot training organizations, must be authorized in advance with a flight permit.

He added that CAAM will provide full support to drone system operators and remote pilots throughout the online application process. The authority will offer clear guidance and assistance to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and safety protocols.

Applications for permits must be submitted at least 14 days in advance to allow for timely and efficient processing and approval.

Drones are regulated by the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) in terms of safety and quality standards, as well as the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia, which is responsible for issuing permits for aerial photography and mapping activities.
