Malaysia’s Durian Exports to China Hit RM24.84 Million in 2023
(Kuala Lumpur, 25th) – Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Arthur Kurup, reported that Malaysia exported 413.61 metric tons of fresh durians to China between August and December last year, generating RM24.84 million in revenue.
Responding to a query from Raub MP Chow Yu Hui in the Dewan Rakyat, he stated that the first batch of durians was shipped on August 24, 2023.
"At present, Malaysian durians have reached 16 regions in China, including major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Tianjin, and Chengdu.
"The Agricultural Counselor’s Office at the Malaysian Embassy in Beijing is actively promoting the unique qualities and benefits of Malaysian durians. Market surveys indicate strong demand, with Malaysian fresh durians recognized as a premium product in China."
Arthur Kurup highlighted that Malaysia’s current durian supply is insufficient to meet export demand, as production is limited to two harvest seasons per year.
He explained that due to the need for immediate refrigerated air freight, Malaysian fresh durians have a shelf life of only three to four days, making transportation costs relatively high.
"In contrast, durians from Vietnam and Thailand are harvested before full ripeness, allowing them to be stored for up to 25 days, which reduces transportation expenses."
Regarding land titles for durian farmers in Raub, he clarified that land matters fall under state jurisdiction.
To support durian growers in Pahang, the Agriculture Ministry has allocated specific areas within Permanent Food Production Parks (TKPM) for durian cultivation.
"The ministry also assists 4,762 farmers under the Long-Term Fruit Cultivation Development Program, providing support in areas such as farm infrastructure, agricultural technology, and equipment."
Additionally, he noted that businesses and investors in the upstream agri-food sector are eligible for government tax incentives.
"These incentives allow qualifying businesses to enjoy up to 100% corporate tax exemption for a maximum of 10 years and claim tax deductions based on eligible capital expenditures."
