Sibu, 6 May – A 72-year-old retired firefighter was scammed out of RM26,100 after he believed he had won a RM30,000 prize from a social media livestream challenge.

According to reports, the victim was at his home in Sibu in March this year when he watched a livestream hosted by a social media user who invited viewers to participate in a challenge. Interested, the senior joined and completed the challenge.

He was then told that he had won RM30,000 and was asked to provide his contact number, bank account details, and personal information. The victim communicated with the individual via WhatsApp, and was subsequently sent a screenshot showing a supposed bank transfer of RM30,000 into his account.

He was then informed that he needed to pay RM500 as a "confirmation fee" before he could receive the prize. After complying, the scammer made further requests for additional payments, citing various reasons.

Trusting the process, the victim followed instructions and made 10 separate transfers totaling RM25,600 to three different bank accounts. Despite making the payments, he was still asked to pay more. It was only at this point that the victim realized he had been scammed and lodged a police report.
