(Alor Setar, 9th) A trailer truck towing a broken-down lorry lost control on the North-South Expressway after the hitch connecting the two vehicles detached. The lorry veered into a roadside ditch and overturned, spilling crates of tomatoes across the road and causing severe traffic congestion.
The incident took place around 10:30 a.m. at the 71.4 km mark of the highway, in the direction from Pendang to Gurun.
The overturned lorry, loaded with crates of tomatoes, scattered its cargo across the entire southbound lane, blocking traffic.
Pendang District Police Chief Rozzi confirmed that the trailer truck was towing the disabled lorry, which had no driver inside, and was traveling from Changlun, Kedah, to Selayang, Selangor.
According to Rozzi, the hitch connecting the vehicles unexpectedly detached, causing the trailer truck to lose control and crash into a roadside ditch. This led to the towed lorry overturning and blocking the entire southbound highway.
He also mentioned that the accident caused heavy traffic congestion toward Gurun, and drivers were advised to exit at the Pendang toll plaza before continuing their journey south.
The Pendang Fire and Rescue Department deployed a team to assist with clearing the scene. According to the department’s chief, Zulkifli, the cleanup operation was completed by 12:00 p.m.
