Poor Health, Work Commitments — 206 of 550 National Service Trainees Fail to Report

(Kuala Lumpur, 8th June) — Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari stated that while the second phase of the National Service 3.0 program began in May, 206 trainees failed to report for duty due to reasons such as poor health or work commitments.

According to National Service Department Director, Major General Datuk Yahya Yusof, a total of 550 trainees were selected for the second phase. This means that 206 individuals did not show up as scheduled.

He said these trainees are bound by the National Service Act 2003, and the government will take appropriate action in accordance with the law.

“Official training admission letters were issued earlier, but those who did not report gave various reasons,” he added.

He mentioned that health issues and work commitments were among the common excuses given. The department will thoroughly review all the reasons to understand why the trainees failed to report.

Adly made these remarks while attending the Madani Care for Veterans event today. He said that apart from issuing formal notices, the relevant department will also proactively contact the trainees to ensure they are aware of their selection and understand the reporting time and location.

He added that the National Service Training Department will submit a report to enable the government to explore suitable solutions based on the situation.

“Although the law allows the government to take enforcement action, we will first assess individual cases and only consider legal measures when necessary,” he said.

According to reports, Director Datuk Yahya previously stated that unlike the first phase pilot program, trainees in phases two and three of the National Service 3.0 program are compulsorily summoned to participate.

These trainees were required to report to designated camps by 16th May. Failure to do so without valid justification or a medical certificate would be considered a breach of instruction.

The second phase of training runs from 11th May to 24th June, lasting 45 days. A total of 550 trainees — 350 males and 200 females — are undergoing training that consists of 70% basic military training and 30% patriotic education. The training is conducted at two camps: the 515 Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Kuala Lumpur and the 505 Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Pekan, Pahang.

The National Service 3.0 program, which was relaunched earlier this year, held its first phase from 12th January to 25th February. In that phase, 116 trainees aged 18 to 25 underwent a 45-day training program at the 515 Territorial Army Regiment Camp. The department also accepts voluntary participants, subject to available slots — 30 such volunteers reported for training on 11th May.
