Kota Kinabalu, April 6 – A longtime customer of a local kopitiam was stunned after being charged RM10 for just two iced barley drinks, prompting him to question whether the beverage had magical properties that could grant immortality.
The man, who chose to remain anonymous, shared his experience on the popular Facebook page “Sabah Big Mouth.” He revealed that he had been a regular patron of the tea shop near the 7-Eleven in Foh Sang for over a decade but had never noticed any issues before, likely because he usually dined in large groups.
However, during a recent outing with a friend where they only ordered two iced barley drinks, he was shocked at the price.
“I wasn’t just shocked once, I was shocked five times,” he joked in his post. “Has the ringgit really fallen that badly? Or am I just out of touch with how expensive barley has become? Unless this barley drink can make you live forever, I don’t understand the price.”
He added that he chose not to name the establishment for fear of receiving a legal letter, jokingly referencing the risk of “eating A4 paper,” a local slang term for being served legal documents. He ended his post saying he could no longer afford to return.
The post quickly went viral, garnering support from fellow netizens who were equally baffled by the steep price. Many chimed in with humorous comments, mocking the pricing.
“Maybe the barley was imported from Italy?” one quipped.
“Maybe the shop owner can go to Genting Highlands a few times a year thanks to prices like this,” said another.
Others encouraged the customer to report the incident to the relevant authorities.
“File a complaint with the Consumer Association or the Ministry of Domestic Trade,” one suggested.
“Let the ministry officials try the drink – maybe it’s made with the rarest water on Earth!” another joked.
While the post was lighthearted, it highlights growing concerns over inflation and unchecked pricing at local eateries, as consumers become more vigilant about what they’re being charged for even the most basic
