(Kuala Lumpur, 1st) – A woman’s unconventional method of frying fish cakes (keropok lekor) using sand instead of cooking oil has stirred conversations online. In her TikTok video, shared by user "@kimiroslan," she demonstrates this alternative cooking approach.
In the video, she heats a pan filled with sand collected from the beach and places a cleaned fish cake into it. As the pan heats up, the fish cake begins to expand, indicating it is cooked.
She mentions that in addition to beach sand, river sand can also be used for frying. According to her, this technique is efficient because sand heats up quickly, reducing cooking time—though a significant amount of sand is required.
Regarding the taste, she claims that this method enhances the natural fish flavor compared to traditional oil frying. She also suggests that the same method can be applied to fry dried fish and anchovies.
While the video intrigued many viewers, it also raised concerns about hygiene and safety. Some users questioned whether beach sand is clean enough for cooking and expressed worries about the risk of accidentally consuming sand.
