Xi Jinping’s Visit to Malaysia: Ushering in a New "Golden 50 Years" of China-Malaysia Relations

Kuala Lumpur, April 15 – Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed confidence that his state visit to Malaysia will yield fruitful outcomes and mark the beginning of a new era in China-Malaysia relations — what he called the new “Golden 50 Years.”

In a written statement upon arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Xi noted that both countries had, in 2023, reached a significant consensus on jointly building a China-Malaysia community with a shared future. He highlighted last year’s grand celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties, underscoring the depth of the bilateral relationship.

“As two major developing nations and members of the Global South, deepening our high-level strategic cooperation serves our shared interests and contributes to regional and global peace, stability, and prosperity,” Xi said.

During his visit, Xi is scheduled to hold in-depth discussions with Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, focusing on bilateral ties and key regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Xi shared his pleasure at returning to Malaysia at the invitation of King Sultan Ibrahim, calling Kuala Lumpur a “beautiful city” and expressing his warm sentiments toward the Malaysian people.

“This visit is an opportunity to further strengthen our traditional friendship, enhance political trust, deepen cooperation in modernization efforts, promote cultural exchanges, and continue building the China-Malaysia community with a shared future,” he said.

Reflecting on his first state visit to Malaysia 12 years ago, Xi recalled the fond memories and deep impressions from that trip. “It feels incredibly familiar and heartwarming to be back on Malaysian soil,” he added. “On behalf of the Chinese government and people, I extend sincere greetings and best wishes to the government and people of Malaysia.”

Xi emphasized that China and Malaysia, close neighbors separated by sea, have enjoyed a friendship that dates back thousands of years. Since establishing diplomatic relations more than 50 years ago, the two countries have adhered to principles of mutual respect, equality, and win-win cooperation — setting an example for international relations.
