Kuala Lumpur, April 16 – The Malaysian royal palace rolled out a warm welcome for Chinese President Xi Jinping with a grand state banquet that showcased the rich and diverse flavors of Malaysian cuisine.
According to the revealed banquet menu, the dinner was carefully curated to feature local specialties, served in a four-course style: appetizers, soup, main course, and dessert, with drinks of coffee and tea.
Appetizers included a spread of charcoal-grilled chicken and lamb satay skewers, served with traditional accompaniments such as onion, cucumber, pressed rice cakes (ketupat), and rich peanut sauce. Also featured were more delicate bites like shrimp dumplings with morel mushrooms, water chestnuts, and chives, as well as otak-otak, a spiced fish cake wrapped in banana leaves.
The soup course was a hearty Malay-style chicken broth with shredded chicken, peanuts, vermicelli, and spring onions, followed by a refreshing mango sorbet to cleanse the palate.
For the main course, guests enjoyed Malay-style baked lamb rice accompanied by crispy fried spring chicken, quail eggs, pickled fruits, and Indian-style flatbread (roti).
Dessert was a celebration of local sweets: black glutinous rice pudding in coconut milk, a variety of traditional Malay kuih, and colorful Nyonya cakes.
To add a personal touch, the menu was presented with Chinese translations to make President Xi and his delegation feel at home. The evening also featured cultural performances, including Chinese traditional dance, reflecting Malaysia’s multicultural heritage and the deep ties between the two nations.
The banquet highlighted not just diplomatic warmth but also the culinary richness of Malaysia as a bridge between cultures.
